Public Service Announcement: Car Tires

A friend forwarded a video clip that describes a little-known danger that might affect any one of us. The clip shows an ABC news story (maybe 20/20?) about the bad effects of aging on car tires. It turns out that car tires can dry out if they sit on the shelf for too long. I did not know that. Furthermore, tires are marked with a date of manufacture. I did not know that, either. Click on the second link in this article and go to the very bottom of the page and there is a guide for reading the manufacturer's code. It is possible to buy a tire that has never been used, but is several years old. Ford Motor Company, along with others, has suggested that we not drive on tires older than six years.

After learning this information, I checked my own tires and was pleased to see that they were all manufactured within months prior to the purchase dates. I had not been sold "old tires." Armed with the information provided by the linked sources above, I feel more confident that in the future I will be able to continue to get the tires that I pay for.
